Leveraging Long Tail Keywords to Increase Traffic

If you run any kind of blog or website, you’ll want to know what the “long tail” keywords are using to find your site. Generally, a long tail keyword consists or 3 or more keyword phrases that people use to type into search engines when they want to find something they are looking for.

For example, the phrase “virus software” would likely be a keyword phrase that has a high volume of organic searches. Many websites will try to optimize their site for these keywords to get higher ranking in the search engines. However, a phrase such as “sites to download virus scanning software” is a long tail keyword phrase that often provides more insight to what specifically a visitor is looking for rather than the more broad keyword phase “virus software.”

These longtail keywords are very important as Google themselves claim that 50% of the total searches on the Internet are unique longtail phrases. Wouldn’t it be great if you capitalize on those 50% of untapped phrases?

Now, if your pages were optimized for some of those long tail keywords, you could increase traffic to your website. Fortunately, there is a FREE keyword tracking software called Hittail that will help you find those long tail keywords. All you do is place a simple line of javascript into the footer of each of your pages (much like your analytics code), and it will track all the search queries to hit your site in real-time.

The data it records for you is quite interesting and useful. It’ll show you the exact phrases that people use to find your site and the specific search engine they used to find it (including country specific versions of google). It will organize these keywords into short tail and long tail categories, and offer suggestions on which long tail keywords you should optimize for. This way, you can optimize your next blog posting or site with these long tail keywords using some basic SEO to expose your site to more organic search phrases.

This to me is a very powerful information that you should be wanting to get your hands on. The only caveat of this program, is that it will not operate in a ‘vacuum.’ By that I mean your site must have some pages of content already (they recommend at least 100) and is already receiving some organic search hits. So this means that brand new sites won’t have much use until they have come up with more content for people to find your site.

Once you have those requirements though, let the software work it’s magic and you’ll have a golden opportunity to increase traffic to your website and increase your website earnings. :)
